Kelso is about 20 km south west of the CBD in the 4815 postcode. More than 10,000 people live here, which makes it bigger than plenty of North Queensland towns. The Ross River Dam sits at its south eastern corner and the Pinnacles and Mount Stuart rise behind it.
The suburb takes its name from James and Mary Kelso, who ran the Laudham Park cattle property here from 1878. Much of that grazing land now sits under the dam. Today Kelso is mostly family homes, with Riverway Drive running down its eastern side and local shops dotted along it.
Because Kelso is a long way from the CBD, people here search for services that will actually come out to them. A business that says clearly that it covers Kelso has a real edge.
