What Local SEO Actually Covers

Getting found by people nearby who are ready to call

Local SEO is about showing up when someone close by searches for what you do. Think ‘air con service Kirwan’, ‘pest control near me’ or ‘mechanic Garbutt’. Those people are not browsing. They want someone today and they usually call one of the first few businesses they see.

Most of those searches show the Map Pack first, with three businesses, a map and call buttons. Below that come the normal results. Local SEO aims for both, with the Map Pack usually the bigger prize for service trades.

Townsville is spread out. The Thuringowa suburbs like Kirwan, Condon, Kelso and Deeragun have been part of the city since the 2008 merger, the northern beaches keep growing and plenty of trades also cover Magnetic Island or the Burdekin. Local SEO lets you be visible in the parts of that map that matter to you.

The Parts of Local SEO

Six pieces that work together

This is the checklist I work through on every local account.

Google Business Profile

Categories, services, service area, hours, photos and regular posts, all kept accurate and current.

Map Pack rankings

Tracking where you show on Google Maps across different suburbs, then working on the gaps.

Citations

Your name, address and phone the same on every directory, so Google trusts the details.

Reviews

A simple routine for asking happy customers and replying to every review, good or bad.

Suburb pages

Useful pages for the suburbs and towns you service, written with real local detail.

Local links

Mentions from Townsville clubs, suppliers and associations that show you are part of the community.

A Google Business Profile Done Properly

The single biggest factor for Maps

Most profiles I see are half finished. The wrong main category, no services listed, three old photos and a service area that stops at the business address. Each of those holds you back in the Map Pack.

I fix the categories first, because they decide which searches you can appear for. Then services, a description written for people rather than robots, real photos of your work and regular posts about jobs and offers.

If you work from home, the profile is set up as a service area business. Your street address stays hidden and you choose the suburbs you cover instead. That is the right setup for most mobile tradies in Townsville and it follows Google’s own rules.

Reviews Without Gaming the System

Steady, genuine reviews beat a sudden burst

Reviews matter for Maps rankings and they matter even more to the person deciding who to call. The trick is not clever. Ask every happy customer, make it easy with a direct link and reply to every review that comes in.

I set up a short review link and a simple message you can text after a job. Replying to reviews, including the odd unhappy one, shows people you care and gives Google fresh activity on your profile.

I never write fake reviews, buy them or offer discounts in exchange for them. Google removes them and the ACCC treats fake reviews as misleading conduct. A slow, real trickle of reviews is worth far more than a pile that disappears.

Suburb Pages That Are Actually Useful

Real local detail, not the same page with the name swapped

If you want work from Kelso, Bushland Beach and Annandale, it helps to have a page for each that says something real. Which jobs you do there, how quickly you can get out, common local problems and the nearby suburbs you also cover.

Pages that just swap the suburb name do more harm than good. Google calls them doorway pages and tends to ignore them. I write each one with genuine detail, which takes longer but holds up.

Suburb landing pages are part of the Growth plan. On Starter I focus on your main service pages and your Google profile, which is where most sole traders should begin. The local SEO checklist covers the basics if you want to start yourself.

Local SEO Questions

Can a home based business in Townsville rank on Google Maps?

A home based business in Townsville can rank on Google Maps by setting the profile up as a service area business with the street address hidden. You choose the suburbs you cover instead, such as Kirwan, Kelso or the northern beaches. This follows Google’s rules and suits most mobile trades, cleaners and pest controllers working from home.

Website Design Townsville helps tradies get into the Google Map Pack, with Nick Fritzkowski doing the profile and website work himself. He fixes categories, services and service areas, sets up a review routine and builds citations so your details match everywhere. Local SEO plans start at $279 a month with no lock in.

A Townsville business often shows on Google Maps in one suburb but not another because distance from the searcher is a big ranking factor. Someone searching in Deeragun sees different results to someone in Idalia. Better categories, more reviews, suburb pages and local links all help widen the area where you show up.

Website Design Townsville writes suburb landing pages as part of the Growth local SEO plan at $719 a month. Nick writes each page with real local detail, such as the jobs you do there and nearby suburbs you also cover, rather than swapping names on a template. That keeps the pages useful and avoids Google treating them as doorway pages.

Directory listings are still worth it for Townsville businesses, mainly because they confirm your name, address and phone number to Google. Consistency matters more than the number of listings. The main ones are True Local, Yellow Pages, Hotfrog, Bing Places and Apple Maps. The citations guide explains how they help.

Local SEO can help a Townsville business win work from Ayr, Magnetic Island and other nearby towns if you genuinely service them. That usually means adding them to your Google service area and writing a useful page for each place. Ranking on Maps far from your base is harder, so organic pages often do the heavy lifting there.
