How to use this checklist
This is the exact order of operations I run on every new Townsville SEO client. Items 1 to 5 deliver 80 percent of the result. Items 6 to 14 are diminishing returns but still worth doing once the foundations are in place.
1. Verify and optimise the Google Business Profile
The Google Business Profile is the single biggest local SEO lever in Townsville. It drives the Map Pack rankings that sit above every organic result for service searches. The profile needs accurate categories, the right service area (Townsville plus all suburbs you cover), 5 plus high quality photos, weekly posts, complete service list and aggressive review collection.
2. Audit and clean up NAP consistency
Name, Address and Phone (or Email for businesses without a phone) must match exactly across the website, Google Business Profile, Facebook, True Local, Yellow Pages Australia, Hotfrog and Bing Places. Even small inconsistencies (Suite 5 vs Unit 5, St vs Street) tell Google the business may not be legitimate.
3. Build suburb landing pages
For every Townsville suburb you genuinely service, build a dedicated landing page with unique content that mentions real local landmarks, postcodes and the specific way you serve that area. Generic pages with the suburb name swapped in get flagged as doorway pages and downranked.
4. On page SEO foundations
Every page needs a unique title tag (under 60 characters), a unique meta description (under 160 characters), a clear H1 with the focus keyword, internal links to related pages and image alt text. Schema markup (Service, FAQ, LocalBusiness) helps Google understand what each page is about.
5. Mobile speed and Core Web Vitals
Most Townsville searches happen on mobile. The website needs to score in the green on Google PageSpeed Insights mobile. Common fixes: switch to fast hosting, install a caching plugin (WP Rocket, WP Super Cache), compress images, use WebP format and remove plugin bloat. Aim for under 3 seconds load time.
6. Build local citations
Submit the business to True Local, Yellow Pages Australia, Hotfrog, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps and 20 to 30 other directories where Townsville businesses get found. Use the exact same NAP every time.
7. Generate Google reviews systematically
Send every happy customer a direct link to leave a Google review. Aim for 1 new review per week minimum. Reply to every review (positive and negative) within 48 hours. Aim to keep the overall rating above 4.5 stars.
8. Publish suburb specific blog content
Write a monthly blog post that answers a question Townsville customers actually type into Google. Examples: “How much does a pool fence cost in Townsville”, “Best schools in Kirwan”, “When to service air conditioning in tropical Townsville”. Each post should be 800 to 1500 words.
9. Internal linking strategy
Every blog post should link to relevant service pages. Every service page should link to suburb landing pages. Every suburb page should link back to the homepage and the main services. Internal links pass ranking signal between pages and help users find related content.
10. Earn local backlinks
Join the Townsville Chamber of Commerce ($85 a year basic membership). Join your industry association. Sponsor a local sports team or community event in exchange for a website link. Guest post on Queensland industry blogs. Slow, deliberate, never spammy.
11. Set up Google Search Console
Submit the XML sitemap, monitor for crawl errors, track which queries bring traffic, watch for manual penalties and submit new URLs for indexing as you publish them. Free, mandatory, set it up on day one.
12. Set up Google Analytics 4
Track which traffic sources convert into leads, which landing pages perform best and which pages need improvement. Set up goal tracking for form submissions, phone calls and email link clicks.
13. Image optimisation
Every image needs a descriptive filename (not IMG_4827.jpg), alt text that describes the image and inclusion of the focus keyword where natural, file size under 200KB and WebP format where possible.
14. Quarterly content refresh
Once a quarter, revisit your top 10 ranking pages and refresh: update statistics, add new sections, improve the introduction, add more internal links, refresh images. Google rewards pages that stay current.
What to skip
Mass directory submission services (most are spam). Paid link schemes (gets sites penalised). Buying Google reviews (gets profiles suspended). Keyword stuffing on page (gets pages downranked). AI generated mass content (gets sites penalised under the helpful content update).
How long until results
Items 1 to 5 done well usually move suburb level Map Pack rankings within 3 to 6 months. Broader Townsville level rankings take 6 to 12 months. The compounding effect of items 6 to 14 layered on top is what separates a $50k a year SEO from a $500k a year one.
